Climate Change, Environment and Food Security

CCT facilitates the adaptation and mitigation of climate change in 5 districts where it has intervened. These are Bahi, Chunya, Geita, Gairo, and Same. The approach is through planting trees, energy saving stoves, conservation farming, and food storage. The planting of trees has been introduced in IR VICOBA in Same and Bahi. In Bahi, for example, the Amani na Upendo group (in Ibihwa village) members have planted trees as a group project. In Mtitaa, different members of IR VICOBA have tree nurseries both as individuals and in groups. In Same, communities are planting trees to mitigate the massive soil erosion that has led to huge pot holes/land rifts, brought about by the one-off heavy rains.

Energy Saving Stoves have proven to be of much added value to those households that have built them. This is in terms of saving time (cooking and also looking for firewood) and also forestless use of firewood.  This area has huge potential that can be exploited through the IR-VICOBA groups for substantial contribution to climate change initiatives. There is a need for further sensitization within IR VICOBA groups to ensure that all members adapt energy saving stoves.

 

Conservation farming has been adopted by a number of households in Same, Chunya, and Gairo/Kilosa. In Gairo/Kilosa there has been impressive adoption as already in a year 80 households have adopted conservation farming. Given these good results seen in Gairo/Kilosa it is expected that more households will adopt conservation farming. People who have embraced conservation farming do not depend

on the weather, a habit which is common among farmers and peasants in Tanzania.

The households that have adopted and practiced conservation farming have increased their yield. Visited farmers who are practicing conservation farming, testified that with the conservation farming, a plot of 36 sq. metres (6 by 6) produces at least 2 bags (@100kg each) of maize13 while just a little more of that is produced in a one-acre piece of land using traditional methods. The evaluators further verified this by observing the food storage facilities that the farmers have put in place. The presence of food storage facilities in the household ensures food security. There is however no evidence of how the interventions in this area are integrated with the District Disaster Committees.
